From Slashdot, there was an interesting article that addressed the issue of funding for Wikipedia and its current revenue generating method. Many fear that without utilizing ads to bring in revenue, Wikipedia will not be sustainable over the long run. I thought that this was an interesting article because it is very relevant to our class and is a sensitive topic that has divided many. I do understand why many would be opposed to using ads, because Wikipedia is running great and we should definitely try not to fix something that isn’t broken; but I am not sure if it can remain sustainable solely on donations. Even though some revenue structure should be devised, I definitely agree with the positing that ads should be avoided at all costs. Corporate influence can create biases in a lot of the information and can potentially take away the communities objective stance. This is apparent in many of other media such as newspapers and magazines. Even though I feel some solution should be worked out in the near future, I agree that Wikipedia doesn’t have any shot at closing down. It has developed into to great a tool and I feel the community would not let that happen.
